Hear
a brief overview of what Wildfireapp does and how to use the Promotion
Builder to create interactive campaigns within social networks like
Facebook.
What do Facebook, 37signals, and Github have in common? They use Erlang, of course! Learn why Erlang is great at concurrency and what type of apps are best served by Erlang. As a technologist or developer we should strive to learn how others think, learn simple tools and embrace proven ideas to shape your own. We'll explore how learning functional programming concepts may help you build simpler object-oriented code. Learn the basics of Erlang and what it offers. Furthermore, we'll look at a few cool Erlang projects that may be worth trying and contributing to.
After the session, you will:
- know what Wildfireapp is and how the Promotion Builder works
- have an overview and history of Erlang
- have seen introductory Erlang syntax (and where to learn more)
- have been exposed to how companies use Erlang
- have been exposed to a few Erlang projects and libraries you'll want to run home and try right away :)

Jonathan Dugan, Platform Evangelist at BitTorrent, Inc.
Jonathan
Dugan, Ph.D. is the Platform Evangelist for BitTorrent Inc, a
networking company in San Francisco with more than 80 million active
users. He directs outreach to external developers using BitTorrent for
distribution. Prior to BitTorrent, Jonathan was founder and president
of ClearBits, a web service for data hosting.
Summary
BitTorrent
is the global standard for delivering large files over the Internet.
BitTorrent technology has turned conventional distribution economics on
its head. The more popular a large video, audio or
software file,
the faster and cheaper it can be transferred with BitTorrent. The
result is a better digital entertainment experience for everyone.
In this talk, Dr. Dugan will discuss BitTorrent Inc, the software development process for filesharing clients, and the two major emerging initiatives in the company: First, BitTorrent is developing a platform for external developers to write JavaScript-based applications (apps) that run inside BitTorrent clients, and use the connections between users to create multi-user interactions. Apps provide rich media experiences for users related to the content they download and share, connect users to Content Creators and other fans, and mash together online services around media discovery and consumption. Second, BitTorrent is initiating licensed content promotion for select Content Creators, enabling distribution to a global audience of media enthusiasts.
